WHAT IS FENCING?
Fencing is a combat sport that has developed from the training and fighting with real swords for battle or duel. In the modern form it is very fast and tactical and at a high level requires lightning speed and reactions, a high level of fitness and mental focus, born out of a lot of training and practice. However, fencing can be enjoyed at all levels and by almost all ages.
In fencing there are 3 weapons, Foil, Epee, and Sabre. The rules and style of fighting a bout are different for each weapon. Most fencers end up specializing in one weapon.
Here at Teesside Fencing Cub we mainly fence with Foil, however Sabre and Epee are being introduced. The sport involves trying to score hits (touches) on your opponent and at the same time avoid being hit.
The equipment worn and obeying safety rules prevents injury and therefore fencing has an extremely good safety record compared to other sports.
We fence on a 17 metre by 1.5 metre strip called a piste. Due to the speed of fencing it can be difficult to see the hits, so we use electric scoring machines, which help the referee make a decision on the winning touch.
